Interest Groups
Welcome to Avon Newcomers and to the many interest groups that await your participation! These groups are the heart and soul of our organization and provide a great way to meet new people, socialize, explore the area and most importantly, to have fun!
Please be advised of our monthly newsletters for scheduled events, contacts and RSVP information for group activities. You may join any interest group at any time throughout the year. Couples Activities
Adventures in Dining: Couples meet approx every other month at local restaurants to share a night out.
Couples Cuisine: Everyone brings part of the dinner menu to a host home where they feast together.
Couples Euchre: Euchre is an easy to learn, fast moving card game. This is a fun couples mixer filled with good company, food and drink. Dates and times vary throughout the year, so watch the newsletter for announcements.
Game Time/Fun Time
Bunco: Join this group for a fun ladies night out playing a fast-moving, easy dice game. Not only will you have a great time, but also you may go home a winner! Each group consists of twelve members, with each participant taking a turn hosting a Bunco night. Meetings are once a month on a night determined by the group.
Bridge: If you already play bridge, you know how much fun you can have. If you don't, lessons have even been arranged in the past for beginners. The groups usually meet on the second Monday of the month.
Canasta: A fun day or night card activity. Lessons can be provided for beginners. Come out and play!
Ladies Night Out: A night out on the town with other newcomers. Leave the kids and spouses at home for a fun night out at a restaurant, movie or local hot spot.
Be Creative
Beadazzled: Join in the fun as we make beaded jewelry and other bead crafts. Check out the newsletter for dates and times.
Yarn and Thread Therapy: Bring you own needlework, sewing or mending projects and enjoy the company in different members homes. This is a great way to finish your projects or start new ones!
Scrapbooking: If your New Year's resolution included getting your photos organized, then why not join us and have fun doing it? We meet at a host's home to crop and scrapbook our photos as well as share our ideas. We will also enjoy some socializing with good company.
Reading and Writing
Book Club: We have daytime and evening book clubs. The daytime group meets the fourth Thursday of the month and the evening group meets the third Thursday of the month. The first meeting is used to select the books for the upcoming season. Enthusiastic about reading? Get together with others who are too.
Writers Group: Have you always wanted to write but didnt know how to begin? Or are you an experienced writer who wants to bounce around some ideas for your next book or magazine article? Come join this group of aspiring writers. We will read and supportively critique each others works in progress.
For the Guys
Men's Golf: Play nine holes on Saturday mornings at 7am at Tunxis Plantation in Farmington. Golfers of all abilities welcome. Come as often as you like or whenever your schedule permits.
Men's Poker: Every month, we meet for a Guy's Night out at a host's home.Typically we play a hold em' tournament and various games. What could be better! No experience necessary.
Women's Golf: Golfers of all abilities are welcome to join this informal group of ladies who meet on Fridays at 9am at Tunxis Plantation Golf Course during the season. Watch the newsletter for the fall and spring scrambles held at various area courses.
Skiing: Downhill skiing is just minutes from Avon at Ski Sundown! We ski on various days of the week during the winter, snow permitting! Cross Country skiing is right in Farmington. Special rates are available to our group, and all levels of skiers are welcome.
Tennis: This group plays at Canton Racquet Club. This is fun, social tennis played in a round-robin format for all skill levels.
Fit-n-Fun Adventure: If you are interested in getting some fresh air and working your muscles, then join our group that meets every Wednesday at 9:30 am. We meet at various trails or nearby neighborhoods to walk, run, roller blade or simply stroll along with new friends, while enjoying the outdoors. Check the calendar for special activities such as yoga, self defense classes and more!
Family Time
Playgroups: Attention mothers! This group organizes small playgroups for children to play and moms to relax over a cup of coffee and make new friends. Those in each group determine meeting times for individual playgroups.
Small Wonders: This group plans monthly field trips for moms and kids from pre-school to kindergarten age. Typical activities are pumpkin and apple picking, Flamig Farm, maple sugaring, etc. Dates vary according to the scheduled activity.
Looking for More?
Helping Hands: This group provides meals for newcomers in need of extra assistance due to illness, a new baby or other crisis.You can lend a hand and feel great about helping out our community.
Free Spirits:This group plans field trips throughout the year to local attractions.Check the calendar for specific dates, times and places!
Lunch Bunch:This group meets for lunch on the second Thursday of every month at a different restaurant.
